Many patients are anxious about getting a dental crown, but the procedure involves minimal discomfort, and the affected tooth usually feels better after it. After a dental examination, your dentist will shave your tooth or teeth down, in a process similar to that used for porcelain veneers. This makes it easier to fit the dental crown over the prepared tooth and cement it on. After preparing the tooth, the dentist takes an impression of your teeth to create a mould for a custom ceramic or porcelain crown to be made. This impression and your tooth enamel colour, for colour matching, are sent away to a dental lab in Toronto that creates these custom crowns. As we wait for your permanent dental crown to be prepared, you will be given a temporary crown.

When we receive your permanent crown from the lab, you will come back into our office to replace your temporary crown with your permanent one. During this visit, the temporary crown is switched out and your permanent one is cemented into place. The strong cement adhesive will keep your crown securely attached to your tooth – even when you are chewing! A dentist will provide you with detailed instructions on how to look after your crowns. Each patient should take care to brush and floss their teeth and dental crowns every day to prevent decay, gum disease, and more.
