When Should Your Child Have Their First Visit With The Dentist?

Recent studies have shown that by the age of three, a child is already at risk of having cavities which could be caused by something as innocent as putting your toddler to sleep with a bottle of juice or milk. So, it’s recommended to book your child’s pediatric dental appointment as early as their first tooth, to start them on the right path of maintaining good oral health for a lifetime.
Is your child in need of their first dental visit? Contact us today by giving us a call and we’ll be happy to help you schedule your first appointment. Our treatment will start by cleaning their teeth, then provide a thorough exam, and discuss how to best look after their teeth at home until it’s time for another check-up. We promise to make their first appointment as easy of an experience as possible for you and your child as our specialists are trained in treating children’s dental issues: their growing mouths, baby teeth and adult teeth, and more.
Pediatric dentists usually see a child patient starting as early as six months old all the way until their adult teeth have come in. A child will continue to develop adult teeth until they’re 12 or 13 years old. Many parents opt to have their children continue to visit a pediatric dentist well into their teenage years. Pediatric dentists are more familiar with issues concerning adolescent oral care and development than general dentists.
Once your child reaches oral maturity, usually by age 18, a general dentist would be better suited, both atmospherically and medically, to deal with any adult dental care treatment. However, the transition from paediatric dentistry to general dentistry is dependent on the patient, where their oral health stands or other special reasons; it’s completely up to you and your child when to transition to a general dentist.

Is Dentistry Covered By OHIP?

Short answer: no, dentistry is not covered by OHIP. In most cases, we will be able to submit your claim to your insurance company. While we expect payment at the time of service we will make every effort to help you with your payment by accepting post-dated cheques or credit card payments (including Amex!). The speed of electronic claims is so fast that you’re never out of pocket. We are also happy to discuss payment plans as an option for patients pursuing larger procedures.
